Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a risk of fleeing
The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the chance of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
He was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
